Getting the right tires for your vehicle can be a challenge. That's why we put together this FAQ to help answer your questions and make it easier to navigate the world of tires.

How Long Is the Life of a Tire?

The lifespan of a tire ultimately depends on the type of tire, your driving habits, and car maintenance. On average, you can expect a set of quality tires to last approximately 50,000 miles, or roughly 4 years if you drive 13,000 miles per year.

What's the Difference Between O/E Tires & Replacement Tires?

O/E tires are Original Equipment tires-meaning they are the tires that come with the car from the manufacturer. O/E tires are important because they are the tires chosen by the manufacturer to handle different roads and weather conditions and are the basis of your vehicle's efficiency ratings. Replacement tires are other brands or models of tires that you can fit to your vehicle.

Choosing a New Tire: What Should I Consider?

There are several factors to consider when choosing new tires:

  1. Size: Ensuring the tire fits your vehicle.
  2. Ride Noise: How much noise a set of tires will generate on the road.
  3. Tire Lifespan: Different tires have different lifespans, given the material and intended terrain-use. The longer the lifespan, the more expensive the tire, so it is important to balance performance and budget.

Tire Disposal: What Can I Do with Old Tires?

Recycling tires is the most practical and environmentally friendly way to dispose of old tires. Several counties do not allow tires to be thrown in landfills. You can take your old tires to a tire recycling facility or call a junk removal service. Several tire shops will even take your old tires for free.

What Are the Aspect Ratio and Diameter of a Tire?

The aspect ratio is the height of a tire's cross-section to its width. When reading a tire size number (for example: 265/70R17) it is the number after the slash. In this case, the aspect ratio is 70% of the tire's width.

The diameter is the measure from one end of the tire to the other, denoted in inches by the number after the R in a tire code. In our example above, the diameter of the tire would be 17 inches.

How Do I Identify Directional vs. Non-Directional Tires?

Directional tires have an arrow marking the intended rotation direction. Non-directional tires do not have any arrow or indication.

What Are the Hottest/Coldest Temperatures Tires Tolerate?

In general, summer tires are safe above 45 degrees Fahrenheit. Any temperature below that, and tires can start to lose their performance. Winter tires, on the other hand, perform best below 45 degrees Fahrenheit.

How Do I Identify Run-Flat Tires (RFT)?

Scan the sidewall of the tire for any markings that may indicate that a tire is a run-flat tire. In general, it may say "RFT," "SEAL," or "ZP."

Can I Mix RFT Tires and Conventional Tires?

No-in general, you can't mix the two types of tires because they are generally different sizes, treads, and are made for different types of terrain.

Is Tire Pressure Monitoring Necessary with RFT Tires?

Yes, you should always have a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) with your RFT tires, because the TPMS is responsible for alerting you of a loss of tire pressure.

How Far Can I Drive on Run-Flat Tires After the TPMS Alert?

Most run-flat tires will last roughly 50 miles after the TPMS alert illuminates. However, you should get your tires serviced as soon as possible to avoid further damage to your wheels.

How Often Should I Check My Air Pressure?

Experts generally recommend that you check your air pressure once a month, using the same tire gauge if possible.

How Much Pressure Should I Put On My Tires?

The amount of pressure in your tires ultimately depends on the tire brand and manufacturer recommendation. In most cases, this range falls between 32 and 35 psi.
